Rocha Miranda is a middle and lower-middle class neighborhood, located in the North Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The neighborhood is served by a railway station of the Belford Roxo branch of SuperVia. Its HDI, in the year 2000, was 0.815, the 77th best in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The neighborhood has an interesting history, as it was known as “The neighborhood of precious stones”, due to the mining in the Rio das Pedras, which crosses the region. Some streets in the neighborhood have names of stones, such as Diamonds, Topazes, Onyx, Amethysts, Tourmalines, Rubies and others. The neighborhood also honors the Rocha Miranda family, who promoted the subdivision of the region in the early 20th century, but who also had Nazi and slave-owning members, as revealed by the documentary “Menino 23”.

The neighborhood has as a reference the 8th of May square, which recalls the participation of Brazilians in World War II, with the names of the cities where the Brazilian soldiers fought and were victorious. The square also houses the monument to Baron of Bananal, one of the founders of the neighborhood. Another highlight is the building of the old Cine Guaraci, which had 1379 seats, Carrara marble staircase and Greek columns, combining architectural elements of art nouveau and art deco. It was designed by Alcides Torres da Rocha Miranda and inaugurated in 19543.

The neighborhood is basically residential, but has some commerce and services, such as shops, supermarkets, banks, schools, churches and hospitals. The neighborhood also has a samba school, Unidos do Uraiti, which parades in the access group.

Rocha Miranda is a neighborhood that offers a good infrastructure, a strategic location, a rich history and a popular culture. It is an option for those looking for a quiet place, but close to other regions of the city.
