Bonsucesso is a neighborhood in the Zona da Leopoldina, in the North Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Its HDI, in 2003, was already 0.861, the 40th best in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro.

In the past, the neighborhood was one of the main industrial centers of the city. Despite the displacement of the economic axis to other regions from the 1980s, it still has a significant number of commerce and services.

In the neighborhood are located the Leônidas da Silva Stadium, from Bonsucesso Futebol Clube, and the headquarters of the club, which competes in Series B of the Carioca Championship.

Bonsucesso is a neighborhood that stands out in the Leopoldina area. Its residents are predominantly middle class. An area where the current neighborhood is integrated, in colonial times it was comprised in the so-called Engenho da Pedra, whose lands extended to the port of Inhaúma, through which the agricultural and sugar production of the Recôncavo of Rio de Janeiro was shipped.

In 1754, the owner of the plantation's land, Cecília Vieira de Bonsucesso, carried out the reform of the chapel of Santo António, which stood close to the installations of the sugar cane mill. The property was known at the time as Engenho da Pedra de Bonsucesso.

At the end of the 19th century, a chapel was built in honor of Nossa Senhora do Bonsucesso, on land at the top of Rua Olga, donated by Adriano Rocha Costa (1896). The image of the saint was unloaded at the port and brought in a solemn procession by the faithful to the new sanctuary. Around 1914, the engineer Guilherme Maxwell, who had acquired the land of the former Engenho da Pedra, decided to subdivision and urbanize them. Under the influence of the First World War (1914-1918), which had broken out in the meantime, he decided to baptize the public places that opened up, with names that honored the countries allied against Germany: France, England, Belgium, Italy and the United States. United. Thus, respectively, the Praça das Nações and the avenues Paris, London, Brussels, Rome and New York were created.

Later, a member of the Frontin family expanded the neighborhood, subdivisioning the area beyond the Leopoldina railway line. Still under the influence of the First War, he opened the streets Clemenceau, Marechal Foch and General Galieni. Saint-Hilaire and Alexander Von Humboldt, scientists who explored the interior of Brazil in the 19th century, were also honored.
